Martin Backpacker First Version Modified

Here we have something truly unique, an early Martin Backpacker guitar with some interesting modifications. This guitar started its life as an early production backpacker with a serial number in the 6000 range, making it likely part of the second production run after the first 5000 orders at NAMM in 1993. These early ones differ from the new ones with a single piece of mahogany making up the neck and sides, a smaller body, and the odd looking narrow headstock. Modifications include an under saddle piezo pickup system with a panel cut in the back for battery access, a fretboard extension added for more range, a custom wood pickguard, and an added body extension attached to the original. The body extension, which was likely added to improve comfort when sitting, appears to be a single piece of mahogany and bears a striking resemblance to the shape of a Travis Bean TB2000 bass. Recently cleaned and restrung, this guitar plays beautifully with a classic backpacker tone unplugged and a beefy full size sound when the piezo is used.
